Description
It is a type of flange that is connected with the pipe by only one filled weld from outside. This flange is not made for severe conditions. The thickness of the pipe is important for the correct dimension of the bore of this flange. There must be a proper gap between the socket weld flange and pipe as this gap can give corrosion problems. These are especially found in stainless steel pipes. The static strength of socket weld flanges is similar to slip-on flanges, but their fatigue strength is higher due to the presence of a single, instead of double, fillet weld.
Socket Weld fittings are mainly used for small pipe diameters (Small Bore Piping); generally, for piping whose nominal diameter is NPS 2 or smaller. Socket weld flanges are widely used in high-temperature systems such as hydraulic equipment and steam lines. As a simple design, socket weld pipes are attached by inserting a pipe into the socket end and applying a fillet weld around the hub of the socket weld flange. This allows a smooth flow of fluid through the pipe. In case of high stress, an internal weld can also be applied.
